Home Safety Tips for the Elderly
With an increasing number of seniors living independently, it has become more important than ever to make sure they are safe at home. Falls, poisonings, burns are some of the common accidents that involve older people. Seniors living on their own are also prone to becoming victims of criminals that target particularly the older adults. If you are a senior living alone, or care for an aging loved one living independently, here is what you need to do in order to make sure their safety at home. Safety-proof the house: Make sure that the hallways and stairs are well-lit & clear of items, such as shoes, books, etc. Do not place a scatter rug on the top or bottom of stairs, and always use banisters and rails while using the stairs. Avoid bathroom hazards: Install grab bars around the toilet and shower, and keep the thermostat on your water heater not above 120° F to avoid scalding.
