Home Safety Tips for the Elderly

With an increasing number of seniors living independently, it has become more important than ever to make sure they are safe at home. Falls, poisonings, burns are some of the common accidents that involve older people. Seniors living on their own are also prone to becoming victims of criminals that target particularly the older adults. If you are a senior living alone, or care for an aging loved one living independently, here is what you need to do in order to make sure their safety at home.
  • Safety-proof the house: Make sure that the hallways and stairs are well-lit & clear of items, such as shoes, books, etc. Do not place a scatter rug on the top or bottom of stairs, and always use banisters and rails while using the stairs.
  • Avoid bathroom hazards: Install grab bars around the toilet and shower, and keep the thermostat on your water heater not above 120° F to avoid scalding. Seniors who have difficulty getting on & off the toilet, or getting in & out of the bathtub should ask their caregiver to get them a raised toilet-seat or a special tub-chair.
  • Avoid poisoning: Do not ever heat your house with the oven, grill, or stove as they can emit carbon monoxide – a lethal gas which you can’t smell. There are also a few things you can do to manage your medications, such as keeping them in a well lit room so that you can easily see the label on them. You must also keep the every medication in its original container to avoid mixing it up with other medicines.
  • Stay protected against abuse: Always lock the doors and windows, and do not let anyone you do not know enter into your house. Doing so will help keep you protected against burglars who may also try to physically harm you.
